Premier League Gameweek 27 Tips: Spurs can heap more woe on City
There is a full round of Premier League fixtures this week as Liverpool look to tighten their grip on the title race by beating Newcastle while Manchester City look to lick their wounds by seeing off Tottenham following their home loss to the Reds on Sunday.
Here are our four best bets for the midweek matches as teams look to boost their chances of European qualification or drag themselves away from relegation trouble.
Tip 1 – Crystal Palace to win @ 6/4
Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa (Tuesday 19:30)
Crystal Palace have won just twice at Selhurst Park in the Premier League this season but they have improved drastically over the last couple of months and could come out on top when Aston Villa visit on Tuesday.
The Eagles have lost their last two home games to Brentford and Everton but they must have gained plenty of confidence from a strong run on the road, where they have won six of their last seven in the top flight having posted successes over Ipswich, Brighton, Leicester, West Ham, Manchester United and Fulham.
Consequently, they are a good price to get the better of Villa with whom they drew 2-2 at Villa Park in November.
Unai Emery’s side are unbeaten in four in all competitions but all of those matches were on their own patch and the team who start the week in eighth have been no great shakes on the road.
They have won at Everton recently and battled back from two-goals down to earn a draw at Arsenal, but they have lost eight of their last 11 league and cup away games so it is difficult to be confident.
Tip 2 – Beto to score at any time @ 14/5
Brentford vs Everton (Wednesday, 19:30)
Everton let a two-goal lead slip against Manchester United on Saturday but they are looking a lot stronger under returning boss David Moyes.
They should be confident heading to Brentford where the Bees have taken just one point from their last five home matches after dropping just two in their first eight at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Toffees were previously a soft touch on the road, but have won at Brighton and Palace lately and the man to watch is striker Beto, who has established himself as Moyes’s main man.
The Guinea-Bissau forward has scored five goals in his last four league appearances for the Merseysiders and he can maintain that excellent record in west London.
Tip 3 – Tottenham to win @ 47/20
Tottenham vs Manchester City (Wednesday, 19:30)
Manchester City have endured a miserable week after being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid and then seen off 2-0 at the Etihad by hot league favourites Liverpool.
And it may take them time to pick themselves up as they head to Tottenham, who will have high hopes that they have turned the corner after a difficult few months with injury problems.
Spurs won 4-0 at the Etihad in November and knocked City out of the Carabao Cup, so they will be hopeful of claiming a seventh victory in nine home games against Pep Guardiola’s side, especially as they have got their Premier League act together with successive victories over Brentford, Manchester United and Ipswich.
City have kept a clean sheet in just four of their 20 league and cup away matches this season and their bad mood may not be lifted on Wednesday.
Tip 4 – Liverpool to win & both teams to score @ 7/5
Liverpool vs Newcastle (Wednesday, 20:15)
Liverpool find themselves in a commanding position in the Premier League with an 11-point lead following Arsenal’s home defeat to West Ham on Saturday and it is difficult to go against them when Newcastle head to Anfield on Wednesday.
However, it is worth noting that the Reds, who have suffered only one defeat and two draws in an otherwise perfect home league record, have kept just two clean sheets in their last nine Anfield league outings and have conceded in their last five.
Newcastle lost their last away league game 4-0 at Manchester City, but that was only the second occasion this term they have failed to score on the road and are capable of threatening Arne Slot’s side even if they are unlikely to leave Merseyside with any points.
