Megan Nicholls Racing Tips: Newmarket Cambridgeshire Meeting
NEWMARKET SATURDAY TIPS
Newmarket 1.50 – Royal Lodge Stakes
We’re getting to the time of year when the ground is getting on the slower side with plenty of wet weather around so horses at Newmarket on Saturday will really need to handle a softer surface.
The Royal Lodge looks tricky as I think both Luther (2/1) and Angelo Buonarroti (11/2) are solid, progressive types.
Luther is clearly a talented horse and his form is stacking up well, with New Century winning a Grade One in Canada recently.
Angelo Buonarroti was impressive at York last time and that race normally features several horses that will go onto bigger and better things, so he can’t be underestimated either.
I think both have solid claims but I’ll just side with Luther as the progeny of Frankel tend to go well on soft ground.
Megan’s Tip: Luther WIN
Newmarket 2.25 – Cheveley Park Stakes
I’m a massive fan of Babouche (11/8 fav).
Ger Lyons has always said this has been the plan since she won the Phoenix Stakes against the boys last time and back against her own sex here, she’s very much the one to beat.
I think she’s exceptionally talented, has done nothing wrong so far and she should be fine on the ground.
I don’t really see much point looking at the others as I think she’s the standout.
Megan’s Tip: Babouche WIN
Newmarket 3.00 – Middle Park Stakes
As I’m so confident about Babouche in the Cheveley Park, it’s hard not to fancy Whistlejacket (10/11 fav) here.
He was beaten by her at the Curragh and then came out and won the Prix Morny next time, which was a really good performance.
Whistlejacket won on the July Course earlier in the season so shouldn’t have any problems with the undulating course of the Rowley Mile and he looks a very solid favourite to me.
His main danger might well be Shadow Of Light (5/1). He was a non-runner on heavy ground at Newbury last weekend but I think this is a horse with plenty of potential and I have a feeling the track will suit him too.
I can see him staying on strongly when they hit the rising ground.
Megan’s Tip: Whistlejacket WIN
Newmarket 3.40 – Cambridgeshire Handicap
The Cambridgeshire is a race that claimers tend to do very well in and with that in mind I’ve come down on Dual Identity (20/1). He doesn’t mind slow ground and I thought it was interesting that jockey Brandon Wilkie has jumped off Looked Back Smiling (50/1) – a horse he’s had quite a lot of success on – to ride Dual Identity.
A stiff mile on soft ground should really suit him and he comes into this after a really good run behind Sir Busker at York last time. He comes back up in trip here but that doesn’t concern me.
BetMGM is paying six places on the race, so I’ll take two here. The other I like the look of is Norwalk Havoc for Jessica Harrington.
Jim Crowley is an eye-catching jockey booking and we know his mount likes soft ground which I think is going to be key here. There is a lot of rain forecast on Friday, which could mean it’s pretty testing by the time they race on Saturday.
I was quite taken by his run at Galway last time and I actually think this more galloping track will really help him, so he could go really well under conditions that we know he’ll enjoy.
Megan’s Tip: Dual Identity EW, Norwalk Havoc EW
