Megan Nicholls Racing Preview: Newbury & Warwick Tips

SATURDAY RACING TIPS

Newbury 1.50 – Handicap Hurdle

Haiti Couleurs (9/2 fav) was a winner at Cheltenham last time and seems to be improving all the time.

He stays really well and Sean Bowen gets a really good tune out of him. He can take another step forward here.

Megan’s Tip: Haiti Couleurs WIN

Warwick 2.05 – Kingmaker Novices’ Chase

I can’t wait to see L’Eau du Sud (1/4 fav) back out.

He’s been seriously impressive over fences this season and, while he was a good hurdler, he’s really taken off over the bigger obstacles.

Bigger targets lie ahead but this looks a nice stepping stone and it would be a pretty big shock if he was turned over.

Megan’s Tip: L’Eau du Sud WIN

Newbury 2.25 – Denman Chase

I’m going to chance Bravemansgame (2/1 fav) here.

He’s got the tongue tie on for the first time and they’ve taken the other headgear off.

We know this is a very talented horse who just hasn’t quite been at his best over the last year or so.

Things didn’t go quite right at Kempton last time but I think the small field here will suit and it would be great to see him get his head in front again.

Megan’s Tip: Bravemansgame WIN

Warwick 2.40 – Listed Mares’ Hurdle

We haven’t seen her for a while but Gala Marceau (Evens) sets the standard.

She’s got plenty of top-level form in the book and her record fresh is fine, so the long absence isn’t too much of a concern for me.

I would imagine Cheltenham is on the agenda but she’s got to get her season started somewhere and this looks a good spot.

Willie Mullins doesn’t send many over to Warwick and it’s probably a tip in itself that his charge is running here.

Megan’s Tip: Gala Marceau WIN

Newbury 3.00 – Game Spirit Chase

It’s disappointing Sir Gino doesn’t run here and I feel that leaves the path clear for Edwardstone (9/4).

You’ve got to respect Matata (15/8 fav) but I do think he needs to get his own way in front to be at his best and I don’t think that will happen here.

Edwardstone has run really well against some very good horses and he probably doesn’t face quite that calibre here.

I think the way Matata goes off quick from the front might just play to his strengths.

Megan’s Tip: Edwardstone WIN

Newbury 3.25 – Premier Handicap Hurdle

This is always a minefield to find the winner – but I’ll give it a crack with Fiercely Proud (9/1).

He just touched off Kabral Du Mathan in the big handicap at Ascot over Christmas and I know trainer Ben Pauling has always thought a lot of him.

I’m pretty sure that’s very strong form and this has been the aim since, so I think he’s got very solid claims in what’s clearly one of the most competitive handicaps of the whole season in Britain.

Don’t rule out Givemefive (22/1) though. He’s got blinkers on for the first time over hurdles and Harry Cobden being on him is very eye-catching.

I would be shocked if he didn’t run a much better race than last time at Windsor, where things just didn’t go right at all.

Megan’s Tip: Fiercely Proud WIN; Givemefive EW
