Newmarket Craven Meeting Day 1 Tips
The Craven Meeting is back on Tuesday afternoon at Newmarket, with a couple of Group 3 races on day 1 including the Earl Of Sefton Stakes and the Classic trial, the Nell Gwyn Stakes.
There’s also a Listed contest and a couple of competitive handicaps to get stuck into with the card kicking off at 13:50.
We have selections and analysis for all seven races on day 1 including a value play in the big race of the day.
13:50 – Newmarket – 6f Weatherbys With Venatour Racing Handicap
Elmonjed finished last season in flying form and it’s no surprise to see him prominent in the market given that his trainer, William Haggas, is adept at getting his horses ready first time out.
He won two competitive handicaps last season including a smart piece of form at York’s Ebor meeting and a 5lb rise for that success looks on the lenient side from the assessor.
Selection: Elmonjed
14:25 – Newmarket - 1m1f Feilden Stakes
The Feilden has attracted some nice three-year-old prospects for the season and Sallaal might be the best of them.
This son of Frankel picked up very nicely to win on debut at Yarmouth and he should improve plenty for a step up in distance here.
Selection: Sallaal
15:00 – Newmarket - 1m1f Earl Of Sefton Stakes
With the ground in his favour, Ottoman Fleet looks like the one they all have to beat in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes.
He won this race last year before Graded success in the States and he’s looked like he retains all of his ability out in Meydan this winter, last seen chasing home Romantic Warrior when fourth in the Jebel Hatta.
He’s the first-string here and looks capable of gaining a third renewal of this contest on the spin.
Selection: Ottoman Fleet
15:35 – Newmarket - 7f Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes
William Haggas has kicked off the Flat season in style by winning the Lincoln at Doncaster and he has an interesting runner in the Nell Gwyn.
Nadra may have only won a four-runner contest on debut but she couldn’t have won in any better style, and she’s bred to excel on the quicker surface she will encounter at Newmarket on Tuesday afternoon.
Selection: Nardra
16:10 – Newmarket - 5f EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes
No form to go on here, but Charlie Appleby has landed this contest a couple of times in the last 10 years and may do so again with the well bred Twilight Star, whose dam was a two-year-old winner and the yard are capable of readying one first up.
Selection: Twilight Star
16:45 – Newmarket - 1m British EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes
Another tricky maiden to negotiate for punters, but Andrew Balding’s filly Zgharta shaped with plenty of promise on her debut at this venue when third in November.
There’s a good chance she’ll improve for a step up in trip here and if she settles better in a first-time hood, she could be the one they all have to beat.
Selection: Zgharta
17:20 – Newmarket - 1m2f Handicap
The unbeaten Treasure Fleet is probably going to be a tough nut to crack in his bid for a hat-trick.
His success at Wolverhampton last time out is worth marking up given the rider dropped his reins and this son of Kingman should be fine switching to turf provided he handles the dip.
Selection: Treasure Fleet
