Wolverhampton Racing League Tips

The Racing League is a fascinating addition to the summer racing calendar and this year’s event got up and running at Yarmouth last week.

Wolverhampton hosts the second round of races on Thursday, and there’s some fiercely competitive handicap action on offer.

Prize money is on offer in abundance here, with several races being worth £50,000 and the finale is a cracking £75,000 sprint handicap.

There are seven races to look forward to, and we’ve taken a close look at each of them and picked out our best bet for every race.

Richard Fahey’s HAVANA RUM appears to have taken a step forward as a four-year-old and he has already won twice this term. The most recent of those was a career-best effort at Pontefract last time out. He certainly would have been an unlucky loser but managed to win despite being significantly inconvenienced at the start. A 4lb rise does make life harder, but it would be unwise to rule out further improvement.

Selection: Havana Rum

18:15 - Tote.co.uk Kevin Blake 'Ah Sure Look' Racing League R9 Handicap (6f)

CITY HOUSE is yet to finish outside of the first three in four starts on the all-weather and he was a very impressive winner of a nursery at Kempton last term. The son of Night Of Thunder came within a neck of winning at Kempton on his penultimate start, and this 2lb higher mark shouldn’t be a problem. Making his debut for the George Scott yard here, his third in a warm race at Newcastle last time out certainly reads well, and a repeat effort could be enough to get him back to winning ways.

Selection: City House

18:45 - Tote.co.uk Yaki Dah To Jamie Osborne Racing League R10 Handicap (1m½f)

SENNOCKIAN loves it on the all-weather and has a record of three wins and two seconds in just six starts on artificial surfaces. It was a much better effort when second at Newcastle when last seen and he’s clearly a fan of tapeta surfaces. He’s due to go up 1lb but races off his unchanged mark here, making now a good time to catch him. This horse should at least be making the frame here and the vastly experienced Paul Mulrennan is on board.

Selection: Sennockian

19:15 - Tote.co.uk No Yeeehaaa For Matt Chapman Racing League R11 Handicap (1m½f)

Hugo Palmer’s SUPASPECIALAWESOME dead-heated with an in-form rival over course and distance when last seen and the form has been boosted since. The handicapper has responded with a 5lb rise which seems harsh but he’s entitled to improve for the run and there could be more to come. He was beaten by a neck off a mark of 76 here last year so a 7lb lower mark is unlikely to be a problem. Most of his best efforts have come here at Wolverhampton and he should be bang in the mix with that in mind.

Selection: Supaspecialawesome

19:45 - Tote.co.uk Linda Perratt Gie It Laldy Racing League R12 Handicap (1m1½f)

ENDLESS POWER is a very lightly raced handicapper with just seven starts to his name thus far. James Tate’s gelding was a game-winner of a Chelmsford maiden in July 2023 and he managed to get off the mark in handicaps at the second time of asking. That success came over course and distance, and he subsequently followed up over a mile at Southwell. He’ll need to improve on his below-par effort at Chelmsford over 1m2f when last seen but that was his first start after a break and is easy to forgive.

Selection: Endless Power

20:15 - Tote.co.uk G'Wed Mick Quinn Racing Racing League R13 Handicap (1m6f)

REACHING HIGH was closer than ever to getting off the mark when second at Windsor back in June. He bumped into a very progressive horse that day, and the front two were a whopping 11 lengths clear of the rest. That explains why the handicapper has put him up 5lb, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he sheds his maiden tag. There’s an abundance of stamina in his pedigree and there’s little doubt that the step up in trip will suit.

Selection: Reaching High

20:45 - Tote.co.uk Leonna Mayor Ey Up Chuck Racing League R14 Handicap (6f)

WILLIAM TWEE is another one who thrives on the all-weather and the five-year-old has finished in the first three in six of his eight starts on artificial surfaces. His last run in a handicap was a little underwhelming but he’s back on the all-weather now and we should see a significantly better performance this time around. He won a Listed race at Lingfield in November and ran a cracker to finish third in a Group 3 at Newcastle in June. A similar effort here is likely to be enough, despite a lofty enough mark of 106.

Selection: William Twee
