A feisty and intimidating competitor on the oche, Gerwyn 'Iceman' Price plays his darts with aggression and conviction. Originally a rugby player (he was a hooker for Neath and Cross Keys in the Welsh Premier League as well as Glasgow Warriors in the Pro12) Price has been throwing arrows professionally since 2014 and is one of the most consistent players on the PDC tour.
Notoriously superstitious, Price has used the same set of darts since he first started playing. He also likes his house in order when he's up at the oche. In a recent interview, he claimed: "If my darts case is on the corner of a table, it has to be the same distance from the edge of the table on both sides, and my water bottle needs to line up with it."
Rival players have clocked onto it – Peter Wright often moves objects to upset his rhythm between throws. It doesn't always work, though, and often serves simply to fire up the natural competitor in Price, who doesn't need much encouragement in accessing his combative instincts.
Take a look at our complete Gerwyn Price profile below ahead of his involvement in the 2024 BetMGM Premier League Darts campaign, which sees eight of the world’s best compete across 17 nights in the UK, Ireland and Europe.
Gerwyn Price History
Born in Markham, Wales, Gerwyn Price can be an intimidating proposition for any opponent with his ex-rugby player physique, Terminator-like laser-focused glare and vocal presence on the oche.
After trying his hand at both codes of rugby, primarily playing as a hooker, Price swapped big hits for big scores, picking up his first set of darts at the age of 27. He discovered he had a gift.
A fast starter, it took little time for Price to earn his PDC stripes. After entering Qualifying School in January 2014 he succeeded in winning his second-ever event to earn a two-year tour card. The rest is history.
Let's take a deeper look at the Welshman and his achievements:
- PDC world champion – It's the pinnacle for every darts player to come out on top of the world and, back in 2021, Price fulfilled that dream. It was at the height of the global coronavirus pandemic, which meant he cruelly missed out on lifting the trophy in front of thousands of fans at Alexandra Palace. He overcame some big names on his way to glory, beating tour stalwart Brendan Dolan, former Lakeside champion Stephen Bunting and two-time PDC world titlist Gary Anderson in the final to become the first Welshman to win the PDC world title
- World number one ranking – His victory at the 2021 PDC World Championship ensured he topped the world rankings for the first time in his career. In doing so he usurped Michael van Gerwen, who had reigned as world number one for seven years
- World Cup winner – Price did his country proud, alongside team-mate Jonny Clayton, in the 2020 and 2023 editions of the World Cup of Darts. They whitewashed an England team comprising Michael Smith and Rob Cross in their first final victory before crushing a strong Scotland outfit made up of Peter Wright and Gary Anderson three years later
