Denmark fixtures

Denmark played their way into the hearts of fans at the last European Championships after turning Christian Eriksen’s serious health scare into a source of inspiration for their unlikely run to the semi-finals. The Danes will hope they can repeat a trip to the final four this year but they will need to impress in the group stages to have a realistic chance.

Kasper Hjulmand’s men open with a favourable fixture against Slovenia – a team that has never beaten them – and end their group stages with an intriguing game against Serbia. However, England vs Denmark, a repeat of the 2020 semi-final, is the game earmarked as the Group C decider on the 20th June.

Here are Denmark’s Group C fixtures in full:

  • Slovenia vs Denmark: 16th June (Stuttgart Arena)
  • Denmark vs England: 20th June (Frankfurt Arena)
  • Denmark vs Serbia: 25th June (Munich Football Arena)

A win over the English should provide group supremacy for Denmark, setting up a knockout round encounter with a third-placed finisher from Group D, E or F in Gelsenkirchen. Losing to England but beating both Serbia and Slovenia likely cements the runner-up spot and a match-up against the winner of Group A (Germany, Scotland, Hungary or Switzerland).

Denmark fans won’t want to contemplate exiting the group in third – even though they did so in their 2020 campaign – as they would tackle the winner of either Group E or F (likely Belgium or Portugal) if that becomes a reality.

Standings

Key players

The torch is being passed in the Danish squad this summer. Experienced veterans will be part of the team to provide knowledge and pass on their expertise, while younger players could deliver moments of magic. It’s a blend that makes Denmark extremely competitive heading into the European Championships on the 32nd anniversary of the year they won it all in Sweden.

Rasmus Hojlund

Caps (goals): 12 (7)

Position: Forward

Club: Manchester United

Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund will lead the line after a polarising season at club level. He did end the Premier League campaign on an impressive run of form; the 21-year-old netted two goals in his final two games against Brighton and Newcastle to take his tally to 10 in what was, in the end, a decent return for a maiden year in England’s top flight.

Hojlund may still be finding his feet in England but he is virtually unstoppable at international level, averaging more than a goal every two games for the national team. All seven of his goals came in Denmark’s eight European Championships qualifiers, including a hat-trick against Finland.

Andreas Christensen

Caps (goals): 69 (3)

Position: Defender

Club: FC Barcelona

At 29, Andreas Christensen is one of the veteran members of the Danish team. He has amassed almost 70 appearances at international level, as well as representing Denmark in the last two World Cups. A versatile defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can operate in a back three, back five or as part of the midfield, Christensen represents the heart of Hjulmand’s defence going into this competition.

Previous performances in the Euros

The Danes are steeped in history at the European Championships. Whether it’s their run to the semi-finals in both 1984 and 2020 or when they shocked the world and lifted the trophy in 1992, Denmark are always a force to be reckoned with on the European stage.

Denmark’s previous performances in the Euros in full:

  • 1960: Did not qualify
  • 1964: Fourth place (lost 3-0 to the Soviet Union)
  • 1968: Did not qualify
  • 1972: Did not qualify
  • 1976: Did not qualify
  • 1980: Did not qualify
  • 1984: Semi-finals (lost to Spain on penalties)
  • 1988: Group stage (fourth in Group 1)
  • 1992: Winner (beat Germany 2-1 in final)
  • 1996: Group stage (third in Group D)
  • 2000: Group stage (fourth in Group D)
  • 2004: Quarter-finals (lost 3-0 to Czech Republic)
  • 2008: Did not qualify
  • 2012: Group stage (third in Group B)
  • 2016: Did not qualify
  • 2020: Semi-finals (lost 2-1 to England)

Expectations

Denmark are expected to navigate Group C with relative ease. Serbia may pose a challenge on matchday three but, with the level of talent and experience in the squad, they should advance to the knockout stages.

Being drawn in the same section as one of the pre-tournament favourites, England, means a more difficult path to advance beyond the last 16 with hosts Germany possibly lying in wait.
