Danny Mullins Profile

Nephew to legendary duo Willie and Tom Mullins, as well as son to successful trainers Tony and Mags Mullins, Danny Mullins is part of a family entrenched in horse racing heritage.

However, Danny is more than doing his lineage proud. On numerous occasions, he has ridden a winner for both his mother and father on the same racecard. Plus, he’s led multiple Willie Mullins-trained horses to victories since his first professional win in 2008.

He is a two-time winner at the greatest show on turf, with both of his victories coming in the Stayers’ Hurdle.

His most memorable triumph came in 2021 on Flooring Porter when he replaced Jonathan Moore at the 11th hour and went on to win the race.

Danny Mullins Record and Previous Winners

Mullins’ Cheltenham record is impressive in itself, winning the Stayers’ Hurdle in back-to-back years in 2021 and 2022.

However, the CV he has racked up on the Irish circuit is something to behold. Here are a few of Mullins’ notable achievements throughout his time as a jockey – including recently winning the race named after his grandparents at Leopardstown:

  • Irish Gold Cup – Kemboy (2021)
  • Champion Steeplechase – Felix Yonger (2015)
  • Future Champions Novice Hurdle – The Tullow Tank (2013)
  • Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle – Il Etait Temps (2023)
  • Paddy and Maureen Mullins Mares’ Handicap Hurdle – Vischio (2025)
  • The Dublin Steeplechase – Solness (2025)

Danny Mullins Cheltenham Record

It took Mullins six years and 35 rides before entering the winner's circle at the Cheltenham Festival but, like London buses, he waited so long for one and two came in back-to-back years for Willie Mullins’ nephew.

That long-awaited first win on the grandest stage came in 2021 atop Gavin Cromwell’s Flooring Porter in the Stayers’ Hurdle – a horse he wasn’t originally meant to be riding.

Mullins was thrust into the saddle when Jonathan Moore declared himself unfit on the morning of the race, a chance with Mullins seized with aplomb to secure his first Cheltenham victory.

Another Stayers’ Hurdle crown on Flooring Porter followed a year later, though he could not make it a hat-trick in 2023 with his best finish coming with a third place in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.

He may have left Cheltenham empty-handed in 2024, too, but the Kilkenny-born rider placed in three races across the four days.

Il Etait Temps’s third-place finish in the Arkle Chase was followed by a runner-up spot in the Triumph Hurdle aboard Kargese, while a third-place finish in the Novices’ Hurdle rounded off a festival of nearly moments.

Danny Mullins Recent Winners

Mullins has had races aplenty in the lead-up to the greatest show on turf.

His best performances came at Leopardstown on 2nd February – when he was victorious in the Handicap Hurdle, named after his grandparents, and the Dublin Steeplechase aboard Vischio and Solness respectively.

Mullins carried on his impressive form at Gowran Park on 15th February, placing in three of his five races. He also won the Red Mills Steeplechase atop Classic Getaway and secured a pair of third-place finishes on Noble Talent and the Willie Mullins-trained Sir Gerhard – a Novices’ Hurdle winner at Cheltenham in 2022.
