Gold Cup: All you need to know
Last year’s winner Galopin Des Champs heads up a strong 2024 field, featuring a host of runners who will be looking to make a name for themselves on one of the biggest days in the racing calendar. The Willie Mullins-trained eight-year-old fought out an epic battle with Bravemansgame last year and, while the latter runs in the Gold Cup again too, there could be fresh challengers to the reigning champion’s crown.
Second favourite Fastorslow was runner-up in the 2023 Handicap Chase at Cheltenham and got the better of Galopin Des Champs at Punchestown last April before losing out once again at Leopardstown this year.
Shishkin, the 2023 Festival Trophy runner-up, will be looking to challenge while the Gold Cup could be an interesting one for Gordon Elliott’s Gerri Colombe. The eight-year-old hasn’t run since December at Leopardstown, losing by a distance to Galopin Des Champs, but this could represent a chance to bounce back and recapture the form he showed when winning the Champion Chase at Down Royal in November.
The field also includes 2023 Grand National winner Corach Rambler. Trainer Lucinda Russell indicated that he is in fine form ahead of the Gold Cup and runs this one ahead of an expected repeat tilt at Aintree in April.

History of the Cheltenham Gold Cup
The Gold Cup has made legends of horses, trainers and jockeys over its 100-year history. As the most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is one of the most sought-after victories in the sport.
Over the last century the Gold Cup has been won by iconic names such as Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller, Kauto Star, Denman and Mill House with thousands descending on the course each March to watch.
Back in the 1930s, Golden Miller won the Gold Cup in five consecutive years and remains the only horse to win the race on five occasions. Pat Taffe is the most successful jockey in the history of the race, winning four times including three with the legendary Arkle while the longest-priced winner was Norton’s Coin in 1990. Sirrel Griffiths’ horse was available at a huge 100/1 when it was ridden to victory by Graham McCourt.
Arkle has had a hand in the Gold Cup leading trainer too, with Tom Dreaper preparing him for victory three times on his way to five total wins as a trainer.
Recent seasons have been dominated by Willie Mullins and Henry De Bromhead in that regard. One of those trainers has won the Gold Cup in each of the last five years with Mullins having back-to-back wins with Al Boum Photo and jockey Paul Townend in 2019 and 2020.
When is the Cheltenham Gold Cup?
The 2024 Gold Cup will take place on day four of the Cheltenham Festival. The race gets underway at 15:30 on Friday 16th March.
