Gordon Elliott Profile

Gordon Elliott is an Irish National Hunt racehorse trainer and one of the sport’s modern greats.

He has landed all the great jumps prizes and became one of the most successful trainers racing has ever seen, landing over 2,000 winners in Britain and Ireland.

The youngest person to ever train a Grand National winner, Elliott has had a successful and eventful career. Let’s take a closer look at his achievements.

Gordon Elliott Record and Previous Winners

In 2007, just one year after taking out his trainer’s licence, 29-year-old Elliott became the youngest-ever trainer of a Grand National winner when Robbie Power rode 33/1 shot Silver Birch to victory at Aintree.

Following success both in Ireland and Great Britain, Elliott won the Grand National again in 2018 and 2019.

His successes with Tiger Roll, in the hands of Davy Russell, meant the horse became the first to win back-to-back Grand Nationals since the legendary Red Rum in 1974 and only the sixth repeat winner in the history of the race. In winning the 2019 edition, Tiger Roll became the first favourite to win the Grand National since Comply or Die in 2012.

Further triumphs were secured in Ireland, such as training General Principle to victory in the 2018 Irish Grand National – a race in which he saddled 13 of the 30 runners.

Elliott is best known for his results over jumps but he did achieve a major win on the Flat in 2010 with Dirar, who was victorious at the Ebor Handicap at York.

Gordon Elliott Cheltenham Record

With 40 winners in total, Gordon Elliott is one of the most successful trainers in the history of the Cheltenham Festival and will be looking to add more winners to his tally at the 2025 edition.

His first Cheltenham success came in 2011, in the National Hunt Chase with Chicago Grey while he won the Coral Cup with Carlito Brigante in the same year.

Further victories followed before the highlight of his Cheltenham career in 2016 when training Don Cossack to Gold Cup glory.

In recent years the accolades have continued – Elliott has won the Cross-Country Chase five times, most recently back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 with Delta Work.

Other notable wins include two in the Triumph Hurdle and the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle as well as three Coral Cups.

With several horses at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, Elliott will be looking to increase his haul even further and cement his legendary status.

Gordon Elliott Recent Winners

Elliott has had several winners already this year, including a stunning four-timer at Navan in January when Jacob’s Ladder, Music Of Tara, Three Card Brag and Spinningayarn were all victorious at combined odds of over 1,500/1.

A doubler at Thurles followed while recent winners at Ayr (Undeniable Ally and Timmy Tuesday) and Down Royal (Disco Dancer) will give further encouragement to Elliott, who trained three winners at last year’s Cheltenham Festival.
