Nico de Boinville Profile
He has had some injury concerns in the run-up to Cheltenham but, all being well, Nico de Boinville will look to continue his incredibly profitable relationship with trainer Nicky Henderson at the greatest show on turf in 2024.
One of the most exciting De Boinville rides had been slated to be Constitution Hill in the Champion Hurdle but a respiratory infection to last year’s incredible winner put paid to what was fancied to be an odds-on victory.
De Boinville will partner up with JP McManus’s Jonbon in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, though, as he bids to maintain a 100% record on that horse while he is also slated to be aboard the unbeaten Jeriko du Reponet in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on the opening day.
Despite breaking a collarbone at Doncaster in December, the 34-year-old jockey was back at it just 15 days later in an effort to prove his fitness for the Clarence House Chase in January. It ultimately came too soon – he had to drop out of the race – but it is testament to De Boinville’s commitment that it was even a conversation.
Of the British jumps jockeys currently active, De Boinville’s record is scintillating; he has the most Grade One winners. He is, simply, a titan of the sport.
Nico de Boinville Record and Previous Winners
Nico de Boinville is approaching 3,500 career rides across all formats. At the time of writing, he has a strike rate of 20.74% and 21.5% in both types respectively.
Injury has put paid to his hopes of landing a British champion jumps jockey title in 2024. Despite having the best strike rate (24%) of all jump jockeys this season, his 49 wins are some way off current leader Harry Cobden’s 138.
He is, however, still one of the most experienced individuals in this arena and his record speaks for itself ahead of his latest tilt at the Cheltenham Festival.
Nico de Boinville Cheltenham Record
You only have to examine who Nico de Boinville has boarded to victory to understand the prestige in which he is held.
As part of his 16 victories at the festival, De Boinville can count genuine modern-day legends in Altior, Shiskin, Sprinter Sacre and Might Bite as some of those he has cajoled to glory.
In 2019, he was the top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with three wins. However, his ride on Coneygree in 2015 remains his only Gold Cup victory.
His most successful races are the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – he has won three of each previously and Jeriko du Ruponet could well make it four in the latter this year.
